Derivatives of ferrocene. III. Preparation of fulvenes from monoacetyl- and diacetylferrocenes

Abstract: cf. CA 55, 16508d.-From monoacetyl- and 1,1'-diacetylferrocene, as passive reaction components of NaOH-catalyzed aldol condensation with cyclopentadiene, both fulvenes, α-cyclopentadienylidenethylferrocene, dark-red, hexagonal, m. 88-9° (Kofler), C₁₇H₁₆Fe, and 1,1'-bis(α-cyclopentadienylidenethyl)ferrocene, dark-red, m. 134° (Kofler), were prepd. in high yield by reaction in quasi-heterogeneous phase in aq. EtOH. Their identities were proved by absorption infrared spectra, which showed higher conjugation as compared with the initial ketones.
