Crystal structure of mullite

Abstract: It was detd. by Fourier analysis that the model of crystal structure of mullite, given by Taylor (CA 23, 2126), was basically correct. Single crystals of electrofused mullite contg. SiO₂ 22.19, Al₂O₃ 76.85, Fe₂O₃ 0.56, and TiO₂ 0.44% were tested. The position of OIII is statistically occupied. By a direct structure analysis, the existence of sillimanite double chain tetrahedra SiO₄^4- was proven. The formula for mullite should be in the form: Al[Si₂-xAlxO11/2-x/2, where x is 1.25-1.40 for 3/2 to 2/1 mullite.
