The determination of hydroxyl groups in organic matter
O. Mlejnek
Res. Inst. Cable Insul. Subst., Bratislava
Abstract: The detn. is based on the acetylation of free alc. hydroxyl groups (II) by glacial AcOH, with H2SO4 as a catalyst and titrating the H2O of condensation with the Fischer reagent (C.A. 29, 6532.9). This method can be applied to org. matter contg. a low amt. of I. Good results were obtained in detg. mono-and di-glycerides of linseed oil, of I of ricin oil, and of alkyd resins modified by linseed oil. This method also can be used in studies of kinetic and mechanism of condensation and reesterification reactions. II is not sufficiently sensitive for detg. I in polyester resins. In this case a modified Hennion method can be applied (Hennion, et al., C.A. 27, 3912). The acetylation of I is done in glacial AcOH by using 1% H2SO4 at 60° for 1 hr. and the H2O of condensation is detd. by the Fischer reagent. Up to 0.03% of I can be detd. by this method.
