Factors affecting the stability of furfural

Abstract: The spontaneous decompn. of furfural (I) in solns. is caused by atm. O at 20-50°, the effect of which is increased with the increase of the surface area and temp. With this change there is no increase in acidity. I decomp. very rapidly in hydroxide and slowly with the same rate in neutral, acid, and carbonate medium. The stability of I is greater in org. than in H2O solns. The relative decrease in concn. of I is the greater the lower the quantity of I in solns. The decompn. of I in H2O solns. is not affected by the presence of cations of heavy metals and by ultraviolet radiation.
