The preparation of monoalkyl ether diethylene glycol esters and monoalkyl ether triethylene glycol esters of salicylic and 4-nitrosalicylic acids. I

Abstract: Monoalkyl ethers of diethylene and triethylene glycol were prepd. by an improved method from alkyl halides and Na monoglycolate in very good yield. From salicyloyl chloride (from salicylic acid and SOCl₂ in the presence of AlCl₃ or TiCl₄), the monoalkyl ether diethylene glycol esters and monoalkyl ether triethylene glycol esters of salicylic acid were prepd. (b.p./mm. and n given): diethylene glycol salicylate, 175-6°/0.8, 1.4533 (Me ether, 142-4°/1, 1.5202; Et ether, 162-4°/1, 1.5124; Pr ether, 167-9°/1, 1.5071; iso-Pr ether, 158-60°/1, 1.5066; Bu ether, 174-6°/1, 1.5034); triethylene glycol salicylate, 210-2°/1, 1.5255 (Me ether, 182-4°/1, 1.5127; Et ether, 188-90/1°, 1.5067; Pr ether, 196-7°, 1.5011; iso-Pr ether, 186-8°/1, 1.4998; Bu ether, 202-4°, 1.4962). 4-Nitrosalicyloyl chloride was prepd. from 4-nitrosalicylic acid and SOCl₂ in the presence of AlCl₃ or TiCl₄.
