Hydroformylation of olefins in the presence of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes

Abstract: Expts. on the hydroformylation of propylene (Ia) proved the inhibitive and retardative effect of α,β-unsatd. aldehydes (I). E.g., at 150°, with the addn. of 0.2% Co by wt. (as Co2(CO)8 or Co stearate) and in the presence of 20% by wt. (calcd. on Ia) of 2-ethyl-2-hexenal or crotonaldehyde, the hydroformylation of Ia is retarded and at 30% is almost completely arrested. Simultaneously, the catalytically active Co carbonyls react with I to form inactive complex compds. When the amt. of Co is larger (0.8%), and esp. with hydrogenation, I gradually disappear to form satd. aldehydes or alcs. The inhibiting action of I can be counteracted by using higher temps. and addns. of alcs. (butanol). It was recommended to add alc. in the ratio % wt. OH/Br no. ≥0.15, if the solvent for hydroformylation of olefins contains I.
