Aging of Schweizer's reagent

Abstract: The changes during aging of Schweizer's reagent (I) decrease its ability to dissolve the cellulose. The sepn. of CuO is aided by increasing the temp. but it can be greatly suppressed by the addn. of stabilizer (sucrose, glucose). On prolonged aging the activity of I is very much decreased by the increasing concn. of (NH₄)₂CO₃ (by absorption of CO₂ from the air) and by oxidation of NH₃ with atm. O. Even small amts. of alkali extd. from glass decrease the activity of I.
