Redox system formed by a metal and its ions of two and three different oxidation states

Abstract: The R. Luther (1900) relation for the potentials of the metal, which is in contact with its ions of 2 and 3 different oxidn. states, is discussed. A thermodynamic anal. of a case of a metal forming ions in 3 different oxidn. states, a, b, and c, is considered. Of 6 standard potentials: E0a/0, E0b/0, E0c/0, E0b/a, E0c/a, and E0c/b, only 3 are independent, and there are 16 possible arrangements of these potentials.
