Abstract: The isomorphous substitution of Al(III) for Si(IV) in the tobermoritic structure was studied by using x-ray phase anal. and D.T.A. The extent of substitution depends on the different forms of SiO2 and on the different compds. of Al used. β-Quartz, quartz-glass, and silica gel as a source of SiO2 and gibbsite (Al(OH)3, reagent grade), boehmite (gibbsite heated at 300° for 7 days), kaolinite (from Sedlec), dehydrated kaolinite (700° for 2 hr.), corundum (gibbsite calcined at 1200° for 3 hrs.), and γ-Al2O3 (gibbsite calcined for 2 hr.) as a source of Al were used in the mixts. The mixts. were heated in an autoclave at 150, 180, and 200° for 10, 24, and in some cases for 48 hrs.
