Preparation of ester from finely dispersed sodium cyanoacetate

Abstract: The effect of H2O, dispersion, and time in prepn. of NCCH2CO2Me from finely dispersed technically pure NCCH2CO2Na by evapg. soln. after cyaniding CH2ClCO2Na in water-free medium of C6H6-MeOH at 20° after adding H2SO4 was studied. It was found that the reaction speed is not affected by finely dispersed salt. Maximum yield was obtained in 50 hrs. and the presence of H2O up to 1% in the reaction medium increased the yield 4%. Dispersion had little effect on esterification yield.
