Abstract: The separation of benzoic acid, salicylic acid, jo-hydroxybenzoic acid and their salts, esters and complex compounds with purines was studied on thin layer chromatography. The interaction between the substrates and solvent system, as well as the influence of pH of the solvent system on the separation of the closely related substances was investigated. It has been found that the separation of these mixtures is more favourable on silica gel with a binding matter, since there is a further possibility to form hydrogen bonding between silica gel and substrates which results in a greater difference in their RF values. On alumina, there is only little difference in RF values of most of these substances because of the chelating character of the bond between aluminium in the absorption material and carbohydroxy grouping of some of the substances to be separated.
