Cinnamohydroxamic acid, a new complexometric indicator for ferric ions

Abstract: Cinnamohydroxamic acid (I) (prepn. described) forms a pink sol. complex with Fe(III) at pH 0.6-1.7. When the I:Fe³⁺ ratio is 1:1. I is suitable as a complexometric indicator for Fe³⁺ at pH 1.0-1.4 and 45-50°. Phosphate and tartrate even in high concn. do not interfere, while oxalate and F interfere in the direct titration of Fe^3+. Of a large no. of cations only Ni²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Co³⁺ interfere. The reproducibility of the results is 0.2-0.3%.
