Distillable phenolic materials from wood methanolysis. I

Abstract: The sepn. of distillable phenolic materials in an amt. of 1.0%, produced in the methanolysis of sprucewood, was carried by a combination of 2 methods, paper chromatography and chromatography on thin-layer Al₂O₃. α-Methoxypropioguaiacone, vanilloylacetyl, α-methoxyguaiacylacetone, guaiacylacetone, α-hydroxypropioguaiacone, vanillin, vanillic acid, and its Me ester were detd. The amt. of distillate (1.0%) is lower than that reported by Kulka and Hibbert (CA 37, 45671).
