Spectrophotometric investigation of the chelation between meso and racemic 2,3-diaminobutane and copper(II) ions

Abstract: The formation of chelates of meso- and racemic 2,3-diaminobutane with Cu(II) ions in the relation to pH was studied spectrophotometrically. In the acid medium up to pH 4.0, both forms of the blue chelate [Cu(2,3-diaminobutane)(H2O2)]2+ and at pH from 4.0 up to 9.98 also both forms of the violet chelate [Cu(2,3-diaminobutane)2]2+ were formed. The compn. of the chelates was detd. by Job's method. Both forms of chelate have very similar absorption spectra with a minor difference in the position of the absorption max. and in the absorption coeff. value. The spectra in the uv region show that all 4 chelates of the system Cu2+-2,3-diaminobutane have absorption max. at 233 and at 232 mμ. The chelates of the type 1:1 and 1:2 of the same diamine show absorption max. at the same wavelength. The 1:2 chelates always show double absorbance values as compared with the chelates of 1:1 type indicating that the absorption is caused by the electrons of the Cu-N bond. Analogous results were detd. in the system Cu2+-ethylenediamine.
