Kinetics of peroxydisulfate oxidation of ethanol and methanol catalyzed by silver ions

Abstract: The rate oxidn. of EtOH with K2S2O8 in the presence of Ag ions at 25° can be expressed with the equation: -d[S₂O₈^2-]/dt = (78 ± 1) [S₂O₈^2-] [Ag⁺] M min.^-1 The rate of oxidn. of MeOH is: -d[S₂O₈^2-]/dt = (2.9 ± 0.1) [S₂O₈^2-] ([Ag+]/[MeOH])1/2 M min^-1 The activation energies are 8 ± 1 and 7.5 ± 1 kcal. mole^-1. The mechanism for both reactions are discussed.
