Synthesis of N-nornarceine imide

Abstract: N-Nornarceine imide was prepared from (-)-α-narcotine via nornarceine, which on fusing with urea afforded the required substance. The attempt to demethylate narceine imide with nitrous acid resulted in formation of a nitrogen-like analogue of (±)-narlumidine.
