Synthesis of substituted benzhydrylamines by Leuckart reaction

Abstract: A modified procedure for the preparation of substituted benzhydrylamines by Leuckart reaction was worked out, benzophenones, formic acid and urea being used as starting materials in the presence of a small amount of nickel catalyst. By this method 17 substances were prepared, 8 of which have not been described. The yield of the respective amines ranged from 50 to 95 %, depending upon the appropriate benzophenone substitution.
